A SALUTE TO HEROES: A VETERANS DAY CONCERT

We invite you to join new Music Director Eckart Preu this Veterans Day as Long Beach Symphony pays tribute to all branches of the armed forces with a program of music by American composers, beginning with Copland’s poignant Fanfare for the Common Man. Considered to be the most popular of all 20th-century orchestral work, the Symphony will perform Barber’s Adagio for Strings (1936); a work of pathos and catharsis played during the announcement of JFK’s death and in the film, Platoon. We will recognize all branches of the armed forces – and all veterans in attendance – with Bob Lowden’s medley Salute to the Armed Forces. Our integrated American society will be celebrated with William Grant Still’s jazz-inspired Symphony #2, G minor, Song of a New Race (1937).

Following intermission, audiences will hear living composer, Anna Clyne’s work for 15-piece string ensemble, Within her Arms (2009), a somber, deeply felt meditation on loss, composed in memory of Clyne’s mother and Grofé’s majestic Grand Canyon Suite, evoking the sounds of nature in a beautiful homage to the American landscape.

Program and artists subject to change.
